Interruptions
The Bad Vibes Club & Field Broadcast – Matthew de Kersaint Giraudeau (GB) + Sam Mercer (GB) + Rebecca Birch (GB) + Rob Smith (GB)
Chrome browser extension, 2016

Developed through research into the history of interruption as an artistic practice, “Interruptions” is a web browser extension that augments, modifies and disrupts the user’s internet experience. Inserting pop up artworks into the user’s screen space dependent on the time of day and the websites they visit, the extension intervenes in the dissonant experience of networked communication procedures. Temporarily positioning itself between the user and the internet, “Interruptions” marks, without blocking, the precarious hierarchies of ubiquitous digital systems. Originally taking place over one week in 2016, “Interruptions” will be re-coded for the timing and context of WRO 2017 DRAFT SYSTEMS.

“Interruptions” was made by Sam Mercer and Matthew de Kersaint Giraudeau under the name of The Bad Vibes Club, commissioned by Field Broadcast. The Bad Vibes Club is a forum for research into the productive possibilities of negative states. It produces original research, and hosts events at galleries and institutions. It was started in 2014 by Matthew de Kersaint Giraudeau, an artist living and working in London. Sam Mercer is an artist and the Digital Projects Producer at the Photographer’s Gallery in London. Field Broadcast is a live broadcast project connecting artists, audiences and obscure locations through the portal of the computer desktop. Field Broadcast has developed through the practice of, and is run by, artists Rebecca Birch and Rob Smith.
